Pac-Man first appeared in arcades in 1980, created by Toru Iwatani for Namco, and its simple sound effects became part of the character's identity. The death animation and its descending jingle were carried into home ports, including the NES version, where a whole new generation learned to associate the noise with losing a life. As retro gameplay clips, remixes and meme edits spread online, the sound escaped the game itself and became shorthand for any small, embarrassing failure, keeping it in constant use decades later.
