The railgun first appeared as a signature weapon in Quake III Arena, the 1999 arena shooter from id Software, where its long-range, high-damage shot made it a favorite for skilled players. Its distinctive firing sound became instantly recognisable to players, long before short-form video existed. As gameplay clips, frag movies and later meme edits spread online, the short blast was lifted out of matches and reused as a standalone effect. It remains popular because it is short, clear and immediately reads as a powerful, precise shot, even to viewers who never played the game.
