Microsoft released Windows 95 in August 1995, and its short startup sound was composed by musician Brian Eno, who was asked to create a brief, welcoming piece for the new operating system. The chime quickly became one of the most recognised sounds in personal computing, heard by millions as home PCs spread through the late 1990s. Decades later it survives online as a shorthand for 90s technology, reused in nostalgia videos, retro gaming streams and memes that celebrate, or gently mock, early home computing.
