Tunngle was a virtual private network service for PC gamers that recreated a local area network over the internet, letting friends play older multiplayer titles together even when they were in different places. Its connecting sound became familiar to players who spent evenings waiting in lobbies and troubleshooting ports and firewalls. After the service closed, the short clip survived as a piece of gaming nostalgia, shared on soundboards and reused in edits about logging on, old multiplayer sessions and the patience needed to get a game running.
