The Nokia Tune is adapted from Gran Vals, a 1902 guitar work by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega. Nokia introduced a monophonic version as a ringtone in 1994, and it shipped on millions of handsets as mobile phones became everyday objects. Its short, clear notes cut through noise and were easy for early phones to play. As polyphonic and later smartphone ringtones replaced it, the original beeping version survived online as a symbol of pre-smartphone era, reused in memes, remixes and videos marking an old phone, an unexpected call or deliberate nostalgia.
