The social credit joke grew out of online discussion of China's social credit system, which rates citizens' behaviour, and was turned into a parody by creators on TikTok, YouTube and Reddit. Instead of a real penalty, users jokingly deduct points for awkward, disrespectful or unpatriotic moments in videos, games and everyday clips. The format spread because it is instantly recognisable, easy to apply to almost any fail, and works without explanation. It remains popular as a quick shorthand for mock judgment in short-form comedy.
