South Korea's survival drama Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, premiered on Netflix in 2021 and became one of its most watched series. Contestants in green tracksuits play deadly childhood games, and a single gunshot marks each elimination, instantly signalling doom. The clip spread through reaction and gaming edits, where editors time the shot to the exact moment someone fails, much like the classic fail sound meme or the beat before it was at this moment he knew. Its staying power comes from that split second of shock, turning any slip up into a life or death stakes gag.

The chilling elimination sound from Netflix's Squid Game: a gunshot followed by a player's groan. Used in fail edits, gaming clips and elimination memes.
The clip opens with a sharp gunshot crack that rings out the instant a contestant loses in Squid Game, followed by the low groan of the eliminated player as they collapse. There is no music and no dialogue, just two seconds of raw, violent finality. Played at full volume it lands like a punch, and the contrast between the sudden shot and the lingering groan is what makes it stick. Creators love it because it is instantly recognizable: one play tells viewers someone just lost, badly, with no coming back. It turns an ordinary fail into a high stakes execution, which is why it keeps showing up in memes.
