Super Mario Bros. launched for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, with music and effects composed by Koji Kondo that became some of the most recognised sounds in gaming. The overworld theme, coin chime and jump sound were built for the NES sound chip and repeated across sequels on later consoles. As gameplay clips, remixes and memes spread online, those short cues escaped the games and became a universal shorthand for retro gaming, achievement and playful nostalgia, which is why creators still use them decades later.
