Wormy comes from SpongeBob SquarePants, the Nickelodeon cartoon that began in 1999, and specifically from the season two story about Sandy's caterpillar Wormy. After Wormy changes overnight into a butterfly, Bikini Bottom panics, mistaking the harmless insect for a monster, while repeated extreme close-ups and loud buzzing sell the fear. Clips and sounds from the episode later circulated on meme soundboards and in YouTube edits, where the buzz became shorthand for any creepy crawly getting far too close to the camera.

The buzzing horsefly sound from SpongeBob SquarePants' Wormy episode, used for close-up bugs, annoying insects and gross-out reveal jokes today.
This is a short, high-pitched insect buzz taken from Wormy, the SpongeBob episode where Sandy's pet caterpillar transforms and terrifies Bikini Bottom. The audio is a rapid, vibrating fly sound that gets louder as the creature fills the screen in an extreme close-up. Played straight, it sells a real bug nearby, but in edits the joke is the contrast between the tiny insect and the horrified reaction it causes. It works best dropped suddenly over a calm scene to make viewers recoil and laugh at the same time.
