Hound Dog was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and first recorded by blues singer Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Elvis Presley released his rock and roll version in 1956, and it became one of his signature hits, topping charts and helping define his early image. The opening line survived through radio, film and television long after the charts, and online it is now clipped as a short recognisable hook for dog videos, teasing edits and nostalgic music posts.
