KEKW started as a Twitch emote based on a frame of El Risitas laughing during his famous interview, where his story about working as a kitchen porter left both him and the host in tears. The emote spread through FrankerFaceZ and BetterTTV in 2019 and became Twitch shorthand for laughing out loud, similar to LUL but more exaggerated. As the emote took off, the matching laugh audio spread to Discord servers, YouTube edits and soundboards, where it is now used whenever chat wants to mark something as peak comedy.

The KEKW laugh sound effect from the viral El Risitas interview, used on Twitch and in memes to react to something extremely funny or absurd.
KEKW is the sound of uncontrolled laughter taken from Spanish comedian Juan Joya Borja, known as El Risitas, during a television interview where he could barely finish his story. The clip is mostly wheezing, high pitched giggling and breathless pauses that keep building for twenty seconds. It does not sound polite or contained, which is exactly why it works as a reaction. Hearing it instantly signals that something has gone hilariously wrong or that a joke has landed too hard, and the escalating laugh makes even a simple fail feel like a complete collapse.
