Patrick Bateman is the central character of American Psycho, and this scream has become one of the most shared sounds associated with him online. Clips of his exaggerated reactions circulated on YouTube, TikTok and soundboard sites, where creators reused the scream apart from its original scene as a shorthand for shock, panic and dark humour. Because the voice is instantly recognisable to viewers who know the film, and still startling to those who do not, it keeps appearing in horror edits, gaming moments and reaction memes long after the film itself became a cult favourite.

The Patrick Bateman scream sound effect from American Psycho, used for shocked reactions, horror edits and meme videos when a moment suddenly turns intense.
This short clip captures Patrick Bateman letting out a sharp, startled scream, his voice rising suddenly before cutting off almost as quickly as it begins. The sound is raw and unsettling, with a strained, almost panicked edge that makes it feel far more intense than a typical movie shout. Played over an ordinary photo or video, it instantly changes the mood, turning something calm or funny into something alarming and absurd. Viewers tend to flinch first and laugh second, which is why the clip works so well as a jump scare, a reaction sound, and a punchline for moments that go wrong in an instant.
