In Brazilian folklore the rasga mortalha, the local name for the barn owl Tyto furcata, has long been feared as an omen of death. Its name translates roughly to shroud ripper, inspired by the tearing quality of its nighttime screech and the legend that the bird flies over houses where someone will die. That reputation carried into Brazilian horror stories, radio dramas and later internet videos, where the cry became a ready-made scare sound shared in memes, edits and soundboards far beyond its original folk context.
