The saxophone hook comes from Careless Whisper, George Michael's 1984 solo single released while he was still fronting Wham!, with the famous solo performed by session player Steve Gregory. The riff became a standalone internet joke in the early 2010s thanks to the Sexy Sax Man viral videos, and editors have used it ever since to add instant romance or irony to a scene. It belongs to the same meme-music family as the Directed by Robert B Weide sting and Running in the 90s, short musical cues that tell viewers exactly how to feel.

The famous saxophone riff from George Michael's Careless Whisper (1984). Creators drop it under slow-motion entrances, romantic gags and smooth meme edits.
Nine seconds of pure smooth: the unmistakable saxophone melody from George Michael's Careless Whisper, all breathy tone and slow, sliding notes that ooze 1980s romance. The riff starts low and climbs with that famous yearning bend, instantly recognisable even to listeners who have never heard the full song. On screen it works like a scent of cheap cologne, turning any entrance, glance or slow-motion walk into something dramatic, seductive or hilariously overblown. Creators love the contrast between its silky seriousness and whatever ridiculous thing is actually happening in the clip.
