Thwomps first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 in 1988 as floating stone enemies that hover above corridors and slam down when Mario passes beneath them. They returned across the series, including Super Mario 64 and later platformers, keeping the same threatening design and crushing attack. Because players hear the slam so often while learning to time their runs, the sound became closely linked with sudden danger and bad timing. It later spread beyond gameplay into edits, memes and soundboards, where the short crash works as a universal signal for something falling or failing.
