Shaggy released It Wasn't Me in 2000 as a single from his album Hot Shot, with Rik Rok singing the chorus that became the song's signature hook. The track topped charts in several countries and became one of the defining pop hits of the early 2000s. Years later, the chorus found a second life online, where creators use its cheerful denial as shorthand for getting caught. Its simple, memorable melody keeps it instantly recognisable even in an eleven-second clip.

A short clip of Shaggy's It Wasn't Me chorus, the catchy denial hook from his 2000 hit, used in memes and edits to joke about getting caught red-handed.
This clip captures the instantly recognisable chorus of Shaggy's It Wasn't Me, with his laid-back Jamaican delivery gliding over a smooth, bouncy reggae-pop groove. In just a few seconds, the singer denies everything with a playful shrug in his voice, turning a serious accusation into a joke. The melody is catchy and light, even as the lyrics insist on innocence despite obvious evidence. Hearing it immediately sets up a punchline, making viewers expect a denial, a cover-up, or someone caught in the act and refusing to admit it.
