Les 12 Coups de Midi is a French television game show broadcast on TF1 since 2010 and hosted by Jean-Luc Reichmann, in which contestants answer general knowledge questions to win money. A harsh buzzer is used in the studio to mark an incorrect answer, a familiar cue for regular viewers of the daytime programme. Short clips of the sound have since circulated online, where creators reuse it outside the show as a universal signal for a wrong answer. Its appeal comes from that instant recognition: even without the picture, listeners understand that someone has just made a mistake.
