Patchouli Knowledge first appeared in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the 2002 Touhou Project game by ZUN, as the quiet librarian of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Fans shortened her name to Patchy and attached the small mukyu squeak to her in doujin works, comics and voice edits, where it became a shorthand for her shy, asthmatic and bookish personality. As Touhou fan videos spread on early video sites and later short form platforms, the isolated mukyu clip was reused as a standalone reaction sound separate from any single scene.

Patchy Mukyu is the cute one-second voice clip of Patchouli Knowledge from Touhou Project, used for shy, sleepy or flustered anime reactions online.
Patchy Mukyu is a very short voice clip of Patchouli Knowledge making her signature soft mukyu sound. It is high, small and slightly squeaky, more like a shy squeak than a spoken word, and it lasts barely a second. Because Patchouli is usually shown as a quiet, bookish and easily flustered librarian, the sound reads instantly as embarrassed, sleepy or overwhelmed. Editors drop it in when a character has no comeback, gets startled, or deflates after a big moment, letting the tiny noise do the reaction for them.
