Phonk grew out of 1990s Memphis rap, reworked in the 2010s into a darker, lo-fi trap sound built on distorted bass, cowbells and slowed samples. It spread through SoundCloud and later TikTok, where it became the default sound for drift videos, gym edits and fast-paced montages. Its raw, underground energy and simple, loop-friendly structure make it easy to cut to, which is why creators still reach for it when they want a clip to feel intense, confident and instantly recognisable without needing lyrics or a familiar melody.
