The Roblox oof originated as the death sound for player avatars in Roblox, the user-created game platform launched in 2006. For years every character that fell apart or reset made the same short grunt, so millions of players heard it daily. Clips of the sound spread to YouTube, Vine and TikTok edits in the 2010s, where creators began adding it to real-life fails and other games. It was later replaced in Roblox itself, which only increased nostalgia for the original Roblox oof and kept it circulating as a standalone meme sound.
