Little is known about who first recorded Merwennnn or where the untitled project file originally came from, so the clip has spread mainly as a standalone soundboard joke rather than as a quote from a known film or show. Its life online comes from the French legend attached to it, which claims that clicking the button three times in front of a mirror makes the demon Merwennnn appear. That simple ritual setup is easy to copy, remix and act out, which keeps the sound useful for pranks, fake horror edits and short meme videos.

Merwennnn is a short meme sound effect linked to the mirror summoning joke, used in prank edits, jump scare setups and funny reaction videos online.
Merwennnn is a short, drawn-out name call that stretches the final syllables until it sounds more like a chant than a normal shout. The stretched delivery gives it a slightly spooky, ritual-like feel, which is why the clip is tied to the joke about summoning a demon in front of a mirror after three clicks. Played without context it lands as absurd rather than scary, and that contrast is the joke. Viewers expect something dramatic to appear, so creators use the rising, lingering tone to build fake tension before cutting to something completely ordinary or disappointing.
