Nyan Cat became one of the internet's defining viral meme in April 2011, when a YouTube user combined Chris Torres's pixel-art GIF of a grey cat with a Pop-Tart body flying through space with the Japanese Vocaloid song 'Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!' by daniwell. The video racked up millions of views in days, and the rainbow-trailing cat went on to inspire countless remixes, parodies and merchandise. More than a decade later it remains shorthand for cheerful, absurd internet nostalgia, still dropped into edits whenever a creator wants instant retro energy.

The iconic 8-bit Nyan Cat jingle from the 2011 viral meme, a cheerful chiptune loop with a bubbly 'nyan' vocal. Creators use it for playful intros and montages.
The Nyan Cat sound is a bouncy 8-bit chiptune loop topped with a bright, synthesized voice chirping 'nyan' over and over, the Japanese sound of a cat's meow. The melody is fast, cheerful and instantly recognizable, with a bouncy bassline that makes it feel like a retro video game level set to maximum happiness. Because it repeats so cleanly, it works as a short loop that lifts the energy of anything it plays under, turning a simple edit into something playful and nostalgic. Even people who have never seen the original video recognize it within a second.
