Oliebol is a deep-fried raisin dough ball traditionally eaten in the Netherlands on New Year's Eve, sold from street stalls throughout December. Calling one verrotte, or rotten, turns a festive comfort food into a playground-style insult in Dutch slang. The clipped phrase spread on soundboards and in short meme edits because it is short, harsh-sounding even to non-Dutch listeners, and easy to reuse as a reaction. It remains popular as a niche Dutch meme sound rather than a line from a known film or show.
