Discord launched in 2015 as a chat platform for gamers and later grew into a home for study groups, creators and large online communities. Its default notification sound became instantly recognisable because millions of users heard it daily for direct messages and server mentions. As screen recordings and meme edits spread across YouTube, TikTok and Twitch, the ping moved beyond the app itself and became shorthand for being contacted, mentioned or pulled into a conversation online, even for viewers who do not have Discord open.
