The laugh comes from Juan Joya Borja, known as El Risitas, during a 2007 appearance on the Spanish television show Ratones Coloraos, where he told a story about working as a kitchen porter. Clips of his distinctive laugh circulated online for years before Twitch users adopted a still image of his face as the KEKW emote. From there the sound spread through streams, reaction videos and meme edits, becoming shorthand for uncontrollable laughter. It remains popular because the laugh itself is instantly recognisable, even without any context.
About this sound
The KEKW sound effect features El Risitas's hearty laugh from the viral Twitch emote. Creators use it for funny fails, awkward moments and reaction memes.
The KEKW sound is a short burst of loud, wheezing laughter from Spanish comedian Juan Joya Borja, better known as El Risitas, whose infectious chuckle became a Twitch staple. It starts with a sharp, breathy giggle, builds into a full, rasping belly laugh, and ends abruptly, leaving the joke hanging in the air. The raw, unpolished delivery makes it feel spontaneous and genuine, like catching someone mid-laugh. Hearing it instantly signals that something is funny, awkward, or gloriously stupid, and it turns an ordinary clip into a shared joke that viewers recognise in seconds.
