It has a tense, ominous feel, with distorted, unsettling audio that signals the meme has reached its darkest point. Creators usually place it at the final reveal, when a joke turns disturbing or a normal topic becomes deeply cursed. Even without the full image sequence, the sound instantly tells viewers that the edit is entering its most intense and eerie stage.

Use this right at the final image swap or worst reveal, after quieter earlier phases. It works best with sudden zooms, desaturated visuals and a hard cut to unsettling text, not with fast comedy captions that undercut the dread.

Revealing the final boss in a horror meme edit.
Escalating a normal topic into something deeply unsettling.
Adding dread to the last frame of uncanny compilations.

More information

The format spread widely online in the early 2020s, especially in short edits and slideshow videos. Phase 9 is associated with the meme's late-stage, most intense section, so creators use this sound when they want a reveal to feel bleak, cursed or psychologically off.
