The sound comes from PlayStation consoles, where it alerts players to a new message from another user on PlayStation Network. Because almost every console player recognises the chime instantly, streamers and editors began lifting it out of gameplay and dropping it into videos as a joke about being interrupted. It became a running gag in clips around streamers such as CaseOh, where the alert signals another unwanted message arriving at the worst moment. Like a Discord notification, it works because the brain treats a familiar alert as real, even in a meme edit.
About this sound
The PlayStation notification chime from Sony's console, used in streams and online memes to signal an incoming alert or an unwanted interruption.
The PlayStation message sound is a short, clean electronic notification chime that plays when a new message arrives on the console. It opens with a soft, bright tone that rises slightly before settling into a smooth, rounded ping, giving it a friendly but unmistakably digital feel. At just under two seconds long, it is instantly recognisable to gamers, even out of context. In videos it works as a punchline in itself, because the familiar alert interrupts whatever is happening on screen and makes the moment feel like a real console notification breaking into real life.
