Top Gun was released in 1986 and became one of the defining action films of the decade, following US Navy fighter pilot Maverick through elite training at Miramar. Its flight sequences, rivalries and hugely successful soundtrack, including Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone and the Top Gun Anthem, kept the film in pop culture for decades and renewed interest after Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Short clips from its world now circulate on soundboards because the name alone signals speed, confidence and 1980s cool.
