The Nokia tune began as a few bars from Gran Vals, a 1902 guitar piece by Spanish composer Francisco Tárrega. Nokia adapted the melody in the 1990s as its default ringtone, and it shipped on hundreds of millions of handsets worldwide. Because almost everyone owned or heard one, the short loop became a shared cultural cue for a ringing phone. It later moved into memes, remixes and soundboards, where creators still use it to signal an old mobile, a missed call or a wave of early internet nostalgia.
