The Stuka was the German Junkers Ju 87 dive bomber used extensively during the Second World War, and many aircraft were fitted with small propeller-driven sirens, nicknamed Jericho Trumpets, mounted on the landing gear. The sirens sounded automatically during a dive and were intended as a psychological weapon, spreading panic before bombing raids. The scream became a stock sound in war films and documentaries, and later spread online as a shorthand for an incoming attack, so editors now recognise it even when it is used for comedy rather than history.
