The line comes from The Mask, the 1994 comedy starring Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss, a bank clerk who finds a magical mask that turns him into a wild, cartoon-like trickster. In the scene the Mask is run over, peeled off the pavement in a flat shape, and proudly shows off the result before laughing. Clips and audio rips circulated on video and soundboard sites in the 2000s and 2010s, and the short call-and-laugh structure made it easy to reuse as a reaction for animated violence, gaming deaths and real life tumbles that look worse than they are.
About this sound
Jim Carrey as The Mask delivers the Look Ma I'm Roadkill line after being flattened, now used as a comic reaction for fails and wipeouts in videos.
This is Jim Carrey in full Mask mode, cheerfully announcing Look Ma, I'm roadkill after being run over and flattened like a cartoon. His voice is stretched, manic and gleefully unbothered, followed by a loud ha ha ha laugh that sells the joke. The humour comes from the contrast between a gruesome image and his proud, kid-like delivery, as if he has just done a clever trick. Played over a fall, crash or embarrassing defeat, it instantly turns pain into slapstick and tells the audience the character is somehow fine.
