Hollow Knight is the 2017 metroidvania by Australian studio Team Cherry, set in the ruined underground kingdom of Hallownest. Its Fungal Wastes area is filled with mushroom creatures and wandering figures whose odd vocalisations stand out against the game's quiet exploration. Short clips of those sounds later circulated on soundboards and in fan edits, where the isolated wah was separated from gameplay and reused on its own. Fans kept sharing it because the call is instantly recognisable to players, yet funny and usable even for viewers who have never visited that part of the game.
About this sound
A short wah vocal sound from a mushroom character in Hollow Knight, used as a silly reaction, fail cue or random punchline in game edits and memes.
This is a brief, drawn-out wah call with a soft, wobbly tone that sounds equal parts confused and disappointed. Taken from the mushroom side of Hollow Knight, it has none of the game's usual tense atmosphere and lands instead as pure comic deflation. The pitch droops as it plays, so a normal moment suddenly feels like it has gone slightly wrong. Creators use that contrast on purpose, dropping the sound over blank stares, small mistakes and awkward pauses where a character seems to be processing bad news very slowly in front of everyone watching the clip unfold.
