Festivus entered popular culture through Seinfeld, in the 1997 episode The Strike, where Frank Costanza introduces his family's alternative December holiday complete with an aluminium pole instead of a tree, a plain dinner, the airing of grievances, and the feats of strength. The joke struck a chord because it mocked polished holiday traditions, and fans began staging their own Festivus gatherings every 23 December. Online, the name became shorthand for an irreverent, low-effort celebration, which is why the clip still appears in seasonal memes and parody videos.
