Megalovania was composed by Toby Fox and had appeared in his earlier EarthBound Halloween Hack and in Homestuck before Undertale made it famous in 2015 as the theme for the Sans boss fight in the Genocide Route. Its relentless opening became inseparable from Sans and from the fight's reputation as the game's hardest battle. Clips isolating just the first line later spread through meme edits, remixes and soundboards, where those opening notes alone are enough for viewers to recognise the reference and expect trouble.
