Rich Men North of Richmond is a song by American singer-songwriter Oliver Anthony, released in August 2023 after a stripped-back performance video filmed by the RadioWV channel went viral. The acoustic track debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, an almost unheard-of feat for an independent artist with no prior chart history. Its blunt lyrics about wages, taxes and political elites made it an instant anthem in working-class and political discourse online. Short clips of its most pointed lines now circulate widely as reaction sounds in commentary edits and memes.
About this sound
A short clip of Oliver Anthony singing his viral hit Rich Men North of Richmond. Creators use the wish politicians lyric in videos about taxes and power.
This clip captures a few seconds of Oliver Anthony's raspy, heartfelt vocals from Rich Men North of Richmond, the stripped-down country folk song that shot to the top of the charts in 2023. Backed by a simple acoustic guitar, his voice carries the worn, earnest tone of a working-class lament as he delivers the pointed wish politicians line. It sounds raw and unpolished, like a porch recording, which only adds to its power. Dropped into an edit, it instantly lends gravity and sincerity, making the viewer feel the frustration behind the words.
